Lance's Statement from the LIVESTONG website: September 9, 2008 – Today, Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor, founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and cycling champion, released the following statement regarding his return to professional sports:
“I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden. This year alone, nearly eight million people will die of cancer worldwide. Millions more will suffer in isolation, victims not only of the disease but of social stigma. After the passage of Proposition 15 in Texas, a $3 billion investment in the fight against cancer which is helping to make this disease part of the national dialogue in America, it’s now time to address cancer on a global level.”
Mr. Armstrong will discuss his cycling program and an international LIVESTRONG strategy on September 24th in New York City at the Clinton Global Initiative. |

Arianna: Back on the Pitch |
|
|
|
What a weekend for Arianna. Her debut for the Milton Dynamite on Saturday went well. She wasn't always sure of where to go and what to do (tentative since it was only her 2nd game with the Dynamite), but in the end she played hard, scored a goal and has a little fun. She doesn't know anyone on her team (all 6th grade girls), but seemed to fit right in.
Sunday was a completely different game. She plays on a mixed team with Genesis and Alexis and having boys makes the game completely different. Much faster, much more intense. The boys can kick the ball almost the length of the field (the indoor pitch is much smaller than the outdoor field) and they do it a lot. This lends itself to a lot of back and forth action, thus, many scoring chances.
This was Ari's first game with the Cobras (green, ugly uniforms) and like the Saturday game, she scored (the team's only goal) and definitely cemented her place on the team. While I don't care for the green uniforms, the team has some hustlers and they're a lot of fun to watch. |
Interesting Thoughts on Sports and Drugs
Once upon a time, the lords of the Olympic Games believed that the only true champion was an amateur, a gentleman hobbyist untainted by commerce. Today they enforce a different ideal. The winners of the gold medals are supposed to be natural athletes, untainted by technology. After enough “scandals,” the amateur myth eventually died of its own absurdity. The natural myth is still alive in Beijing, but it’s becoming so far-fetched — and potentially dangerous — that some scientists and ethicists would like to abandon it, too. What if we let athletes do whatever they wanted to excel? Before you dismiss this notion, consider what we’re stuck with today. The system is ostensibly designed to create a level playing field, protect athletes’ health and set an example for children, but it fails on all counts.
